Yennefer of Vengerberg

Yennefer of Vengerberg is the sorceress Geralt loves and Ciri's adoptive mother in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, voiced in English by Denise Gough. She leads the search for Ciri with Geralt, and she can be romanced: tell her you still love her at the end of the quest "The Last Wish" and the two retire together.

Yennefer of Vengerberg is the sorceress Geralt of Rivia loves, the woman who raised Ciri beside him, and in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt his partner in the search for their daughter and one of his two possible romances. Denise Gough voices her in English. IGN's recap of the earlier games (May 16, 2015) calls her Geralt's "lady love": both were killed by a mob and revived by Ciri, and when the Wild Hunt took Yennefer, Geralt offered his own soul to the Hunt in exchange for hers. The Witcher 3 is the first game in which she appears in person.

Who Yennefer is

Yennefer comes from Andrzej Sapkowski's novels, and Stories with Cookie's primer (Dec 19, 2022) retells her past there. Born in Vengerberg with a hunchback and a misshapen face, beaten by her father and then her mother, she was taken in by the school of sorceresses at Aretuza for her talent, and magic gave her the beauty sorceresses were expected to have. The training also left her unable to have children, which she later came to regret. She is proud, sharp-tongued and powerful, and she and Triss Merigold were friends at Aretuza.

Her bond with Geralt began with a djinn. In the books, as the same video tells it, Yennefer tried to capture a djinn that Geralt had unknowingly bound to himself, and when it turned on her, Geralt spent his last wish binding the two of them together so it could not kill her. Whether their love is real or only the wish's work is a question The Witcher 3 asks outright.

In The Witcher 3

The game opens on Yennefer. In Geralt's dream at Kaer Morhen, the opening scene finds the two of them together in a quiet room before a view over the valley. CD Projekt Red's developers, looking back at the game's 10th anniversary (May 30, 2025), recalled that one of the longest email threads in the studio's history was about how much of Geralt the bath scene should show, and said the quiet kiss that follows was rare for games of its time; the opening was meant to "start intimate" and then show the open world.

Spoilers follow. Awake, Geralt and Vesemir follow her trail through White Orchard in "Lilac and Gooseberries"; she had left after a battle at Willoughby. Geralt finds her in Vizima at the court of Emperor Emhyr, Ciri's father, and she sends him on to Velen and Novigrad while she leaves for Skellige. There, after the feast for the late King Bran at Kaer Trolde, she drags Geralt into taking the Mask of Uroboros from the druid Ermion's laboratory to follow Ciri's trail. At Kaer Morhen she lifts Uma's curse with the Trial of the Grasses, revealing the elf Avallac'h, who knows where Ciri is, and she fights in the battle that follows. Before the last battle she asks Geralt's help in "The Great Escape".

CD Projekt Red's 10th anniversary trailer (May 19, 2025) gives her the opening of its last chapter, "The hunt begins": Yennefer under a storm, lightning running from her hands, before the Wild Hunt and Ciri.

The Last Wish

"The Last Wish" starts at the end of the Skellige quest "The Calm Before the Storm", at the inn in Larvik on Hindarsfjall. Yennefer wants to summon a djinn and undo the wish that bound her to Geralt, to learn whether what they feel is their own. Geralt helps her, and once the wish is broken, she asks what he feels. Telling her he still loves her starts the Yennefer romance; the other answers end it. Players who also pursue Triss Merigold end up with neither. Romance: Yennefer or Triss compares the two.

Under a cream sail, a white-haired man in chain mail and leather with a scar over his eye and swords on his back sits between a red-haired woman in a green and brown jacket at left and a woman with curly black hair, a black coat and a choker at right. Water and a far shore are behind them, and The Witcher Wild Hunt logo sits at lower left.

The romance ending

If Geralt chooses Yennefer, the epilogue sends them away together. IGN's endings guide (Dec 17, 2022) puts it simply: if you romance Yennefer in "The Last Wish", "the two will retire together far from the noise and danger of politics and adventure". Romancing both Yennefer and Triss leaves Geralt alone. In Blood and Wine, a romanced Yennefer is the one who visits Geralt at his vineyard, Corvo Bianco, in the final quest. What happens to Ciri, which Yennefer's support helps shape, is set out in Endings.

Her alternative look

Yennefer has a second outfit. "Alternative Look for Yennefer" was one of the 16 free downloadable add-ons CD Projekt Red released after launch, in the same batch as the contract "Missing Miners"; GOG's catalog dates it May 19, 2015. Since the 2022 Next-gen update it is a switch in the settings rather than a download, and IGN's guide of Oct 1, 2026 shows it is still there in Remastered: from the title screen (not the pause menu), open Settings, then Gameplay, and turn on Yennefer's alternative look near the bottom, beside the ones for Triss, Ciri, Dandelion and the Nilfgaardian soldiers, then load your save. It changes only how she looks, and it can be switched back at any time. Geralt's own outfits are on Transmog.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Yennefer in The Witcher 3? Yennefer of Vengerberg is a sorceress, Geralt's great love and Ciri's adoptive mother; in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt she works with Geralt to find Ciri and is one of his two possible romances.

Who voices Yennefer in The Witcher 3? Denise Gough voices Yennefer of Vengerberg in the English version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

How do you romance Yennefer in The Witcher 3? To romance Yennefer in The Witcher 3, complete "The Last Wish" in Skellige and tell her you still love her after the djinn breaks the wish; do not also romance Triss, or Geralt ends up alone.

When does The Last Wish quest start? The Witcher 3's quest "The Last Wish" starts after "The Calm Before the Storm", when Yennefer meets Geralt at the inn in Larvik on Skellige.

Should I choose Yennefer or Triss in The Witcher 3? Either works: The Witcher 3 gives Yennefer an epilogue in which she and Geralt retire together, and Triss one in which the two settle in Kovir; choosing both leaves Geralt alone.

Is Yennefer in the first two Witcher games? No. Yennefer is mentioned in The Witcher and The Witcher 2, but The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the first game in which she appears in person.

How do you change Yennefer's outfit in The Witcher 3? In The Witcher 3 (next-gen and Remastered), go to the title screen, open Settings, then Gameplay, and switch on Yennefer's alternative look; it applies when you load a save and cannot be changed from the pause menu.

Is Yennefer in the Remastered version? Yes. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered (Sep 29, 2026) is a free upgrade of the same game with both expansions, so her quests and romance are there, and IGN's guide of Oct 1, 2026 shows her alternative look still in its settings.
