Romance: Yennefer or Triss
In The Witcher 3, Geralt can end the game with Yennefer (say "I still love you, too" at the end of The Last Wish) or with Triss (kiss her in A Matter of Life and Death, then ask her to stay and say "I love you" in Now or Never); declaring love to both leaves him alone. Keira, Jutta, Madame Sasha, Shani and Syanna are one-time flings that change nothing.
Geralt of Rivia can end The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with one of two sorceresses: Yennefer of Vengerberg or Triss Merigold. Each romance is decided in one quest's final conversation: Yennefer's at the end of "The Last Wish" in Skellige, Triss's on the docks at the end of "Now or Never" in Novigrad. Tell both of them you love them and Geralt ends up with neither: IGN's ending guide of Dec 17, 2022 sums it up, if he romances neither or tries to romance both, he "will continue along the path of the Witcher alone", while a successful romance with Triss sends the two of them north to Kovir, where she advises the king. The rest of this guide covers each route step by step, the one-time flings with Keira Metz, Jutta an Dimun, Madame Sasha, Shani and Syanna, and what the epilogues show. Nothing about romance changed in The Witcher 3 Remastered, the free upgrade released on Sep 29, 2026, according to KeenGamer's Remastered romance guide of Oct 2, 2026.

How the choice works
The game's order of events tilts a first playthrough toward Triss. In Neon Knight's "Triss vs Yennefer" video of Apr 30, 2023, the creator says his first playthrough "funneled" him straight to Triss: played in the intended order, Geralt sees Yennefer for a few minutes in Vizima and then not again for "30 to 40 hours", by which time everything with Triss in Novigrad may already be done. Nothing is locked until a declaration, though. Kisses and intimate scenes keep a route open; only the words "I love you" to Triss or "I still love you, too" to Yennefer decide the ending. A player who wants Yennefer can enjoy Triss's quests in Novigrad as long as Geralt does not ask her to stay and declare his love on the docks.
The order is up to the player. Act I sends Geralt to Velen, Novigrad and Skellige in any order (see Main quests), so a player can reach Skellige and Yennefer before finishing Triss's Novigrad story. Both romances must be settled before "The Isle of Mists", the quest that fails most unfinished side quests.
How to romance Yennefer
Yennefer is the first person Geralt sees: the game opens with a dream of the two at Kaer Morhen, which CD Projekt Red's developers remember in their 10th anniversary video of May 30, 2025 as "the famous bathtub scene", with a kiss they call subtle for its time. In the story she has spent months searching for Ciri on Emperor Emhyr's behalf, and she leaves for Skellige after the "Imperial Audience" in Vizima.
Her route has three steps, per KeenGamer's guide and Shacknews' romance guide of Feb 14, 2020:
- "The King is Dead - Long Live the King" (Skellige, suggested level 16). At the feast for King Bran at Kaer Trolde, Yennefer has Geralt help steal the Mask of Uroboros from the druid Ermion. During the fight with the earth elemental in Ermion's lab, pick "Damn, I wanna kiss you, Yen." Later, in her room, "Wouldn't mind watching..." leads to the optional scene with the stuffed unicorn; "We should get back to the wake." skips it. Neither choice decides the romance.
- "The Last Wish" (Skellige). It starts at the end of "The Calm Before the Storm", when Yennefer meets Geralt at the inn in Larvik on Hindarsfjall. Console Pulse's quest order guide advises doing it as soon as it is offered.
- The declaration. At the end of "The Last Wish", once the djinn has broken the wish that bound them, Yennefer says nothing has changed for her. Pick "I still love you, too." to stay together. Saying he does not feel the same keeps them friends and ends the romance.
"The Last Wish" is a quest about the two of them, not a monster hunt. Geralt and Yennefer sail the Skellige coast looking for the wreck of the djinn specialist Amos var Ypsis, breathe underwater by her magic, find the other half of a broken seal, and summon the djinn on his wrecked ship, where Geralt fights it with Elementa Oil on his silver sword until Yennefer takes control (GameBanshee's walkthrough). GamingBolt's list of the game's 15 greatest quests, of May 5, 2017, calls it a tribute to their relationship that ends on "a rather touching moment". The romance pays off again in Act II: Shacknews notes a second intimate scene at Kaer Morhen in "No Place Like Home" for a Geralt who did not break her heart.
How to romance Triss
Triss Merigold lives in hiding in Novigrad, where witch hunters burn mages. Geralt finds her in "Pyres of Novigrad" and helps her in a chain of quests (Shacknews lists "Get Junior", "A Favor for Radovid", "A Matter of Life and Death" and "Now or Never"). GamingBolt picks "A Matter of Life and Death" among the game's greatest quests, saying even loyal Yennefer fans agree it is great, a quest of dialogue and character rather than fighting.
Her route has two steps:
- "A Matter of Life and Death" (Novigrad). It begins at the end of "Count Reuven's Treasure": Geralt and Triss go to a masquerade ball at Lady Vegelbud's to smuggle a mage out of the city. In the hedge maze, by the fountain, kiss her when the game offers it; she falls, Geralt catches her, and he kisses her again. Declining ends her route. Before following Triss into the maze, win the three Gwent matches at the party for the unique cards Milva, Vampire: Bruxa and Dandelion, which cannot be won later.
- "Now or Never" (Novigrad). Triss's perfumed letter asks Geralt to help her smuggle the last mages out of the city through the sewers to the docks. When she says goodbye on the docks, pick "Stay with me." and then "I love you." She leaves for a moment, comes back, and a romantic scene follows at the lighthouse.
Refusing to help in "Now or Never" does not fail the quest, but it ends the Triss romance (GameBanshee). It also has a wider effect: ignoring her quest locks Geralt out of "Reason of State", which leaves King Radovid in power at the end (TheGamer). Play Gwent with Olivier at the Kingfisher inn before "Now or Never", which can kill him.
Trying both: It Takes Three to Tango
If Geralt says "I love you." to Triss and "I still love you, too." to Yennefer, in either order, the game starts "It Takes Three to Tango" during "Final Preparations" in Act III. The two sorceresses invite Geralt to a room, tie him to the bed and leave him there. KeenGamer says the quest cannot be avoided once both declarations are made; only loading a save from before the second declaration undoes it. The epilogue then shows Geralt on the road alone, still working as a witcher.
One-time romances
Five more women can spend a night with Geralt without changing his ending. Keira Metz is the best known: GamingBolt calls her a very well-written character "who it turns out can also be romanced", in the quest line that runs through "A Towerful of Mice". Per Shacknews:
- Keira Metz (Velen): finish "Hunting a Witch", "Wandering in the Dark", "A Towerful of Mice" and "A Favor for a Friend"; in the last, return her lost items and keep agreeing to her requests through dinner. Her fate is a separate choice: in "For the Advancement of Learning" she can go to Novigrad (where Radovid has her burned), be killed, or be sent to Kaer Morhen as an ally.
- Jutta an Dimun (Skellige): beat her in the duel in "Iron Maiden", then visit her at home later.
- Madame Sasha (Novigrad): during the "High Stakes" Gwent tournament, beat her at Gwent or agree to help her, then accept her dinner invitation.
- Shani (Hearts of Stone): after "Dead Man's Party", stay at the wedding for "A Midnight Clear", bring her a gift, then answer "It was all right.", "Unfit - What's that mean?", "I prefer you.", "Better by a mile." and "Kiss sure didn't sate me."
- Syanna (Blood and Wine): in "The Night of Long Fangs", choose to find Syanna; after the cloud giant in the Land of a Thousand Fables ("Beyond Hill and Dale"), accept her advances.
None of these affects the Yennefer or Triss ending, and Shacknews says so for each.
What the endings show
The romance outcome appears after Ciri's ending, unless the game ends with Ciri lost (see Endings). IGN describes the three versions: with Yennefer, "the two will retire together far from the noise and danger of politics and adventure"; with Triss, they move north to Kovir, where Triss "earns a handsome living as an adviser to the king" and Geralt takes the occasional contract; with neither, or both, Geralt travels alone, taking contracts and remembering old friends.
The story goes on in Blood and Wine, set later in Toussaint, where Geralt gets his own vineyard, Corvo Bianco. Its final quest, "Be It Ever So Humble", brings a visitor: Yennefer or Triss if Geralt romanced only her, otherwise Ciri if she survived, otherwise Dandelion (Console Pulse). KeenGamer adds that Yennefer moves in for good and brings the unicorn. Neon Knight's verdict: "Blood and Wine makes clear Geralt ends up okay regardless of who you choose."
Yennefer or Triss: which to choose?
There is no wrong answer and no gameplay reward either way: both romances give an ending scene, and the choice of partner does not change Ciri's fate. Yennefer is Geralt's great love and Ciri's adoptive mother in Andrzej Sapkowski's saga, and her bond with Geralt and Ciri drives the game's story; Neon Knight finds the game captures her bold, demanding personality faithfully. Triss, Geralt's partner in the first two games, is gentler in this one: Neon Knight points out that she drops everything to help find Ciri and still comes to defend Kaer Morhen even if Geralt refuses her. Yennefer is voiced in English by Denise Gough, Triss by Jaimi Barbakoff. More on both is on Characters.
Frequently asked questions
Can you romance both Yennefer and Triss in The Witcher 3? No. In The Witcher 3, declaring love to both triggers "It Takes Three to Tango", in which both sorceresses leave Geralt tied to a bed, and he ends the game alone. Kissing both is fine; only the two declarations count.
How do you romance Yennefer in The Witcher 3? At the end of The Witcher 3's Skellige quest "The Last Wish", after the djinn breaks the wish that bound them, choose "I still love you, too." and do not tell Triss "I love you" in "Now or Never".
How do you romance Triss in The Witcher 3? In The Witcher 3, kiss Triss in the hedge maze in "A Matter of Life and Death", then in "Now or Never" choose "Stay with me." and "I love you." when she says goodbye on the Novigrad docks.
When is the last chance to romance Triss or Yennefer? Both romances should be settled before "The Isle of Mists" in Act II of The Witcher 3, which fails most unfinished side quests; Console Pulse advises doing "The Last Wish" as soon as Yennefer offers it.
Does sleeping with Keira, Shani or Syanna ruin the Yennefer or Triss romance? No. The Witcher 3's one-time romances with Keira Metz, Jutta an Dimun, Madame Sasha, Shani and Syanna do not affect the Yennefer or Triss ending.
What happens if you romance nobody in The Witcher 3? If Geralt romances neither Yennefer nor Triss, The Witcher 3's epilogue shows him continuing alone as a witcher, taking contracts.
Did Remastered change the romances? No. KeenGamer's guide of Oct 2, 2026 says nothing about romance changed in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, released Sep 29, 2026.
