Geralt of Rivia
Geralt of Rivia is the hero of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a white-haired witcher of the School of the Wolf, a monster slayer mutated as a boy, who searches for his adopted daughter Ciri. Doug Cockle voices him in English, as in every Witcher game and in the 2027 expansion Songs of the Past.
Geralt of Rivia is the hero of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: a witcher, a monster slayer for hire whose body was changed by mutations, and the man the player controls for almost the whole game. IGN's primer "The Witcher in 5 Minutes" (May 16, 2015) explains the trade: witchers start out human but are mutated by "a huge influx of potions, poisons, and other elixirs" that, if they survive, give them strength, heightened senses and cat's eyes; add years of training and "you get a witcher, a witcher just like Geralt of Rivia". In The Witcher 3 he searches the war-torn North for his adopted daughter Ciri before the Wild Hunt finds her. Doug Cockle voices him in English.

A witcher of the Wolf
Witchers share a few marks, as Stories with Cookie's primer (Dec 19, 2022) lists them: cat-like eyes that see in the dark, a medallion that senses monsters and shows the witcher's school, rapid healing, resistance to poison and disease, superhuman speed and strength, and the inability to have children. Geralt's medallion is a wolf's head: he trained in the School of the Wolf at Kaer Morhen, where his teacher Vesemir and his fellow witchers Lambert and Eskel still winter. Witchers are said to feel no emotion, the video notes, but Geralt plainly loves, grieves and gets cranky.
In Andrzej Sapkowski's books, as the same video retells them, Geralt's mother, the sorceress Visenna, left him at Kaer Morhen as a boy; he survived the mutations, then a second, harsher round of them that drained the color from his hair. "Of Rivia" is a name he chose, not a birthplace: Vesemir advised taking one to seem trustworthy, and Geralt is said to have picked Rivia from a map. The game borrows this past without retelling it; The Witcher series explains how books and games relate.
His names
Geralt carries several names, all from Sapkowski's books. The elves call him Gwynbleidd, "the White Wolf" in Elder Speech, for his hair and his school; the name is close to Welsh "blaidd gwyn", white wolf. "Of Rivia" began as a borrowed surname and became a real title when Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia knighted him in the books (Wikipedia, read Oct 24, 2026). "The Butcher of Blaviken" is the name the town of Blaviken gave him after the bloody fight in Sapkowski's story "The Lesser Evil", collected in The Last Wish, where he killed a band of robbers in the market square to stop a worse killing (Wikipedia, read Oct 24, 2026).
Before The Witcher 3
Geralt arrives in The Witcher 3 with a long past. To save the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg from the Wild Hunt, IGN's recap says, he offered his own soul in her place and rode with the Hunt; five years later he was found with no memory and taken to Kaer Morhen, where The Witcher (2007) begins. In The Witcher 2 (2011) he hunted the kingslayer Letho and recovered his memories, leaving the fates of Yennefer and Ciri unknown.
His part in The Witcher 3
Spoilers follow. The game opens with Geralt and Vesemir following Yennefer's trail to White Orchard and Vizima, where Emperor Emhyr hires Geralt to find Ciri. The search takes him through Velen, Novigrad and Skellige to the Isle of Mists, where he finds her, and back to Kaer Morhen, where Vesemir dies in the battle against the Wild Hunt. He kills the Hunt's generals and finally its king, Eredin, before Ciri faces the White Frost. The full plot is in Story, and what becomes of Geralt and the people around him is in Endings.
The emotional peak is Geralt's, not Ciri's. Speaking at the game's 10th anniversary (May 30, 2025), CD Projekt Red's animators said the scene where Geralt finds Ciri seemingly dead on the Isle of Mists was one of the very few where they pushed his face "a bit over the top", letting him reach "his human side": "He's scared." The scene, they said, is about how much he loves her.
In play, Geralt is as much a detective as a swordsman. Quest designer Pawel Sasko told IGN (Sep 29, 2026) that The Witcher 3 is "a detective game in a dark fantasy world" and Geralt "is a detective": his witcher senses, his inhuman hearing, smell and sight, are how he reads a crime scene, as in the Bloody Baron's ruined rooms, so that what the player does matches the story. Between investigations he fights with sword, Signs and Alchemy, rides Roach and plays Gwent.
The player's Geralt
Geralt is a defined character, but the player shapes him. Dialogue choices decide whether he is warm or curt, whom he loves (Yennefer, Triss or neither, see Romance: Yennefer or Triss), whom he helps in the war and how he raises Ciri, which decides her fate. Builds shape how he fights: since The Witcher 3 Remastered (Sep 29, 2026) his skills sit in a new Ability tree with three ranks per skill, and Transmog (Reforge) lets him keep a favorite look while changing his armor. Depending on the choices, the epilogue finds him alone on the road, with Triss in Kovir or retired with Yennefer.
Doug Cockle's Geralt
Doug Cockle has voiced Geralt in English since the first game. He told PC Gamer at gamescom 2026 (Sep 4, 2026) that when he began recording The Witcher the books were not yet available in English, so his Geralt came from CD Projekt Red's own descriptions; Sapkowski's The Last Wish appeared in English a few weeks after recording for The Witcher 2 began, and he bought a copy at once. In the same interview he recalled that Henry Cavill, the Netflix series' first Geralt, said Cockle's performance had inspired his approach. Cockle's role in The Witcher 3 earned a nomination for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2015. In the original Polish, Geralt is voiced by Jacek Rozenek. GamesRadar ranked Geralt the 6th best hero in video game history in 2018, and Tom's Guide put him among its 25 best video game characters of all time the same year (Wikipedia, read Oct 24, 2026).
After Blood and Wine
Blood and Wine (2016) left Geralt at Corvo Bianco, a vineyard in Toussaint, and CD Projekt Red long called it the end of his adventures. Cockle and John Schwab, Dandelion's voice, told PC Gamer they had taken the studio "at their word" and imagined Geralt "relaxing comfortably at Corvo Bianco"; both were surprised and delighted to return. Songs of the Past, a paid expansion due in 2027 from CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory, sends Geralt with Dandelion to the bard's homeland, Letten. The next game, The Witcher 4, which CD Projekt Red is targeting for a 2028 release window, makes Ciri the protagonist.
