Witcher gear sets
The Witcher 3's witcher gear sets are the armor and swords of the old witcher schools, Cat (light), Bear (heavy), Griffin and Wolf (medium), crafted from diagrams found on scavenger hunts and upgraded through Enhanced, Superior, Mastercrafted and, with Blood and Wine, Grandmaster tiers; Viper, Manticore and the Netflix-inspired Forgotten Wolf sets complete the list. Remastered (Sep 29, 2026) left the sets as they were and added Reforge, which changes how gear looks without changing its stats.
The witcher gear sets of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are the armor and swords of the witcher schools, which Geralt crafts from diagrams found on scavenger hunts: the light Cat (Feline) set, the heavy Bear (Ursine) set and the medium Griffin and Wolf (Wolven) sets, each upgraded through five tiers, plus three sets with fewer tiers, Viper, Manticore and the Forgotten Wolf. Neon Knight's ranking of Feb 1, 2023 counts seven sets in all, not counting Geralt's starting armor, and stresses that "no Witcher gear is trash": every set is usable, and the right one depends on the build. School gear is the backbone of almost every build on Best builds, because its stats grow with Geralt's level and its bonuses match a playstyle.

How the tiers work
Each of the four main schools has five tiers: basic, Enhanced, Superior, Mastercrafted and, since Blood and Wine, Grandmaster. The diagrams for each tier are found on a separate scavenger hunt (quests named "Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear" and so on), and crafting a piece consumes the piece of the tier below, so a player upgrades one set rather than collecting many. The lower tiers are crafted by ordinary armorers and blacksmiths of enough skill, such as those in Oxenfurt for Griffin gear. Mastercrafted gear needs the master craftsmen: the armorer Yoana at Crow's Perch in Velen, reached through the quest "Master Armorers" (level 24), and the smith Hattori in Novigrad, through "Of Swords and Dumplings". Grandmaster gear needs level 40 and is crafted by the smith Lazare Lafargue in Beauclair, in Toussaint, from diagrams hidden around that region; the Grandmaster Griffin hunt, for one, splits its diagrams between Fort Ussar and Mont Crane Castle.
Set bonuses come with the Grandmaster tier (and with the Manticore and Forgotten Wolf sets) and switch on at three and at six pieces; the lower tiers and the Viper armor have none. Gear weight matters too: light armor regenerates Stamina fastest and protects least, heavy armor the reverse. Levity, a glyphword from the Ofieri runewright of Hearts of Stone, turns a medium or heavy armor into light armor, a trick Neon Knight uses to pair Bear or Manticore gear with the Cat school's light-armor skill.
The sets, one by one
Viper. The Viper school's Serpentine swords are the first school gear a player can find: in White Orchard, a letter from the witcher Kolgrim, on a body under a chapel north of the village guarded by a level 7 wraith, starts "Scavenger Hunt: Viper School Gear", the silver sword diagram lies beside it, and the steel sword diagram is in a chest in bandit ruins west of the Ransacked Village; the quartermaster at the Nilfgaardian garrison crafts both. The Viper armor came later, with Hearts of Stone. Neon Knight ranks it last: its diagrams are bought during that expansion and it cannot be upgraded, so it never gains a Grandmaster tier or set bonuses, though its damage resistances are among the best for medium armor.
Forgotten Wolf. The Next-gen update of Dec 14, 2022 added this Wolf variant, styled on the Netflix series, with its own quest ("In the Eternal Fire's Shadow"). It is the only witcher set that cannot be dyed, and its Grandmaster version changes look. Neon Knight finds it a weaker take on the regular Wolf set: its gauntlets raise one Sign's intensity where the Wolf gauntlets raise all of them, its three-piece bonus extends potion duration by 7% per piece and its six-piece bonus strengthens Aard cast inside a Yrden circle.
Wolf (Wolven). The Wolf set is medium armor built for a little of everything, a sword and Sign hybrid that does no single thing best. Its Enhanced diagrams start with notes on the witcher Elgar sold by Hattori in Novigrad (about level 21), with the pieces in Velen. Its Grandmaster bonuses were changed in the next-gen update because they used to be weak, Neon Knight explains, and now center on bleeding: they reward filling the swords' rune slots with bleed runes. The Inverse guide to the 2016 version names its old bonus, three oils at once on a sword.
Manticore. Manticore gear comes only from Blood and Wine, at a single tier with Grandmaster-level stats, so it is strictly late-game armor. It is the alchemy set: its bonuses let bombs score critical hits and add one charge to every alchemy item. Neon Knight notes that the next-gen update toned it down along with several alchemy skills, so a Manticore build can no longer keep four decoctions active without toxicity damage, but it still allows the most alchemy of any set (Alchemy).
Cat (Feline). The only light set, Cat gear gives quick Stamina regeneration and less protection than any other witcher set in exchange for the highest raw sword damage, fast attacks and critical hits. Its base diagrams are found around Novigrad and Oxenfurt, with one hunt for boots around Benek in Velen. Its Grandmaster bonuses make a strong attack boost the next fast attacks for five seconds and give attacks from behind 50% more damage.
Griffin. Griffin gear is the Sign set, all about sign intensity and fast Stamina regeneration, with solid protection; its base diagrams are in Velen and the Oxenfurt armorer and blacksmith can craft them. Neon Knight calls its Grandmaster bonuses the best in the game: at three pieces Geralt can cast two Signs in a row, and at six pieces Yrden's circle grows by 40% and, inside it, his sign intensity doubles, he takes 20% less damage and regains Stamina faster. Builds around it are on Signs.
Bear (Ursine). The heavy Bear set has by far the best damage resistances; Neon Knight says a full Grandmaster set alone stops 50% of monster damage, even after the next-gen update toned resistances down because Bear armor was so easy to exploit. Its base diagrams are in Skellige. Its Grandmaster bonuses refill the Quen shield by chance when it breaks (three pieces) and raise Quen's damage (six pieces), and the set also speeds up Adrenaline gain.
Which set is best
There is no single best armor in The Witcher 3; it depends on the build. Neon Knight's ranking of Feb 2023, made on the next-gen version, puts Bear first, Griffin second and Cat third, then Manticore, Wolf, Forgotten Wolf and Viper. Community build guides agree in broad lines: Manticore with the Euphoria mutation for the strongest overall alchemy build, Griffin for Signs, Bear for a Death March! tank and Cat for fast-attack swordplay. Remastered rebalanced the skills these builds rely on, so the old numbers may shift.
What Remastered changed
The biggest gear change in The Witcher 3 Remastered is cosmetic. Reforge, the transmog CD Projekt Red added on Sep 29, 2026, changes an item's look without touching its stats, and IGN's guide explains that only the master craftsmen offer it: Yoana for armor at Crow's Perch and Hattori for weapons in Novigrad, both unlocked by level 24 quests, while Lafargue in Toussaint does not reforge. A look unlocks when Geralt has that gear or its diagram in his inventory, and Blood and Wine dyes carry over. Full details are on Transmog.
CD Projekt Red's gamescom 2026 demo, uploaded by GameSpot, opens with Reforge: Geralt stands before a blacksmith and his armor changes from witcher gear to a red and silver suit.
CD Projekt Red's patch notes list no change to the sets' stats, tiers, diagrams or bonuses; the one gear item is a fix for the Forgotten Wolf diagrams not showing in the interface. The change around them is in the Ability tree: Game8's list of the Remastered skills, updated Oct 13, 2026, shows six School Techniques in the General tree with no prerequisites, one per school, each scaling with the pieces of its weight class worn. Cat's adds 8% critical hit damage and 2% fast attack damage per piece of light armor, Bear's 2% Vitality and 2% strong attack damage per piece of heavy armor, and Griffin's, Wolf's, Manticore's and Viper's work with medium armor.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best armor in The Witcher 3? No single armor is best in The Witcher 3; it depends on the build. Neon Knight's 2023 ranking puts the Bear (Ursine) set first for its resistances, then Griffin for Signs and Cat for sword damage, and Manticore is the alchemy set.

Blood and WineBlood and Wine is the second and largest expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, released May 31, 2016, which sends Geralt to the duchy of Toussaint to hunt a beast killing its knights and adds Mutations, Grandmaster gear, a vineyard of his own and a level cap of 100. It is meant for level 34 or higher, has several endings decided by who lives among Syanna, Anna Henrietta and Dettlaff, and has been free for every base-game owner since Aug 25, 2026. -
